What is Random Name Generator?

A random name generator produces plausible person names out of large pools of real first names and surnames. Each press of Generate draws fresh combinations, so you get realistic-sounding full names for any purpose: test data for a spreadsheet or database, placeholder characters for a story or game, alias ideas, sample users for a design mock-up, or quick picks for a draw. Unlike a list of the same shuffled names, every batch is drawn at random from thousands of first-name and surname combinations, and you can constrain the output to male or female names only. Everything is computed locally in your browser — the names never touch a server.

Common Uses for Random Name Generator

  • Fill test databases and spreadsheets with realistic sample names
  • Name placeholder characters in fiction, scripts or tabletop games
  • Generate alias ideas for profiles, pen names or roleplay
  • Create sample users for UI designs and mock-ups
  • Pick random winners or assign anonymous labels in a draw

How the generator works

The engine keeps separate pools of male and female first names plus a large surname pool. On each generate it draws one first name and one surname independently, producing a full name whose parts are individually realistic. Because first and last names are drawn independently, you get natural variety — repeated presses essentially never repeat a full name. Choosing a gender simply narrows the first-name pool.

Realistic names vs made-up names

Realistic random names are right when you need something that reads as a normal person: test data, sample users, anonymous labels. If you want names that sound exotic or fictional instead, use the Fantasy Name Generator or the D&D Name Generator, which build names from syllables rather than real-name pools.

Why random names beat name lists

Static name lists give the same entries to everyone who finds them, and search-engine-scraped lists often repeat or contain duplicates. A generator draws fresh combinations every time, guarantees variety inside a batch, and lets you tune the shape (gender, count) to your task — which is why developers, writers and teachers prefer generating to copying.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these names real?
Yes — the generator draws from pools of real English first names and surnames, so every combination is a plausible real person's name. The combinations themselves are random and not tied to any actual person.
Can I generate only male or only female names?
Yes. Use the Gender dropdown to pick Male, Female or Any. The list updates with a fresh batch immediately.
How many names can I generate at once?
Between 6 and 48 per batch. Press Generate as many times as you like — every press draws a brand-new random set. Use Copy all to grab the whole batch.
Is it free?
Completely. No sign-up, no watermark, no limits — and nothing you generate leaves your browser.
Can I use these names for a story or a game?
Absolutely. The names are combinations of common real names, so they are safe to use for fictional characters, test data, placeholders and mock-ups.
